Choir and Chorus in Montreal List
We have a number of people that come to our open rehearsals to try out our chorus to see if it our chorus is right for them (and for our chorus to see if they are right for us). Those that find their niche with our chorus stay. Those that do not feel that what we offer is the best fit for them usually write us and say that although they did have fun and support what we are building that our chorus is not for them. We tend to get 1-2 new visitors a week. I wanted to create a list for those visitors to help them find the right choir or chorus for them to be a part of. This does not include the number of people that write to me expressing they would join our chorus, except for the fact they are not available during our scheduled rehearsal times, or they are seeking an ensemble that rehearses closer to where they live. So if you know of a choir or chorus that is open to new members, please contact us so we can list that choir and chorus below. It is also in the hopes that by networking with the choirs and choruses in and around Montreal, that when they encounter a singer who would be a good match for our chorus, that they will forward the singers our contact information. Thank you!

Greater Montreal Chorus
Email: [email protected]. Telephone: 1-514-561-5537
Westmount Baptist Church 411 Roslyn Avenue, Westmount, Quebec
The Greater Montreal Chorus (and all women chorus) was created through the merger of the Montreal Chorus and the South Shore Chorus. Both groups had been active in barbershop singing since the 1950s and had received their charters from Sweet Adelines International in June of 1966. In the mid-1970s the South Shore group found themselves with a director, Jean Woods, but no practice hall and few members while Montreal had a hall but no director; the solution was a mutually beneficial joining of forces. Today, the Greater Montreal Chorus has 30 plus members ranging from the age of 21 to 85. We are rehearsing Monday nights at 7:00 at our rehearsal hall in Westmount Baptist Church.

Monday Choir in NDG
We are an amateur adult choir that meets on Monday evenings at the Explorations Learning Lab on Somerled near Walkley in NDG. We sing fairly accessible folk and Rock based music with two or three part harmonies. Some songs we are working on right now: Pour Un Instant by Harmonium, People Have The Power by Patti Smith, Turn turn Turn by Pete Seeger via the Byrds, etc. I am a musician and mostly retired music teacher and music therapist that started this choir to encourage people who are afraid to sing. We started in October 2023 and will take a summer break mid-May.
Our numbers vary, but are usually in the mid teens up to twenty-four.

Our parish is in constant need for singers and readers. The parish has a busy schedule of services throughout the Liturgical year. We celebrate vigil and Liturgy on all Saturday evenings, Sunday mornings and Great Feasts, respectively. As well, Great Lent preceding Pascha is especially busy. You can view the service schedule on the parish web site at www.saintnicholasmontreal.com.
A word about choir duty.
A choir is always needed for the celebration of services. The choir is in constant need of new singers to replenish and grow the ranks of the choir to a respectable size. Services are celebrated in church slavonic, sung in traditional (obikhod) chants, as well as old chants and compositions. Singers need not be professional, nor know any of these elements of church singing. As long as they have a good ear, they will easily and quickly learn.
Choir duty also includes giving exposure to the rich culture of Russian Orthodox sacred music. As such, the choir presents concerts to the public. These events also serve as fundraisers for the parish and for charitable causes. In 2011, the choir gave a benefit concert for the suffering in Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami.
Those with a talent to sing should make it a duty to join the choir ranks. Singers in our parish are not trained musicians, and they are not paid. But they have a gift from God, and they give of their time and talent for His glorification. Singing in a choir is a duty and obligation. It requires a commitment. It requires dedication to be present regularly at services, and to attend rehearsals.
If you want to join the choir or if you want more information, please contact any of the clergy,
or contact the choir director Michael W. Krieger [email protected].
